Lessons from My Fitness Journey
When it comes to fitness, striking the right balance is vital, not just in terms of exercises but also in the environments we choose to work out in. From my experience as a Les Mills Body Combat instructor and regular gym goer, I have found that mixing things up and tailoring your routine to your needs can make all the difference.
Variety Keeps You Motivated
One of the best things about modern fitness is the sheer variety of workouts available. My own routine includes:
- Les Mills Body Combat: A high energy, martial arts inspired workout that keeps my adrenaline pumping and helps release stress.
- Les Mills Body Pump: A barbell based strength class that builds muscle endurance and tones the body.
- Les Mills Body Balance: A calming yet challenging fusion of yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates, perfect for improving flexibility and centring the mind.
- Shape: Focused strength and toning sessions that complement the cardio heavy classes.
These classes each bring something unique, from the uplifting group atmosphere to the challenges they present.
The Importance of Warm Ups and Cool Downs
Whether it is a gym class or a solo session, proper warm ups and cool downs are non negotiable. I often start with a light treadmill walk or jog to get my heart rate up, then stretch after my session to prevent injury and aid recovery. These few extra minutes are key to staying consistent and injury free.
Solo Workouts vs Group Energy
Sometimes, I crave the focus of a solo session in the gym. The treadmill is my go to for these moments, there is something therapeutic about setting my own pace and zoning out. On other days, nothing beats the energy of a group class. Being surrounded by like minded people, led by inspiring instructors, and motivated by great music can push you further than you thought possible.
Why Balance Matters
Balancing solo and group workouts, strength and cardio, and intense and restorative classes ensures you stay engaged, avoid burnout, and work towards well rounded fitness. Your body and mind benefit from the variety, keeping you healthier and happier in the long run.
Whether you are just starting out or looking to refresh your routine, remember that balance is the key to progress. Find what works for you, mix it up, and enjoy the journey! If you are unsure where to start or how to balance your routine, seeking support from a personal trainer or fitness professional can provide tailored guidance, but remember, this is just my journey—yours will be unique.
