When I first stepped upfront as an instructor to teach Les Mills Body Combat, I had no idea how quickly the first year would fly by. What started as a personal challenge has become one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
This journey did not start on the day I certified. It began two years earlier when I was simply a participant. Body Combat was the very first class I ever took, and I still remember how it felt to walk into that studio not knowing what to expect. The energy, the music, and the coaching hooked me straight away. It was the best class I had ever done, and I never forgot that feeling. That memory comes back every time I notice someone new stepping into Combat for the first time.
Looking back, it is hard to believe how much has happened in just twelve months. I have taught 150 classes, covered 60 classes, worked across 10 health clubs, and taught through 10 Body Combat releases. That includes not only the latest programmes but also the back catalogue releases I purchased. Why? To keep my classes more vibrant, fresh and engaging for participants, and to bring variety for myself as a coach.
The Journey
The beginning lets say was nerve racking. Learning to coach while keeping my technique sharp, remembering choreography, and building my presence in front of a room full of people was no small task. But as weeks turned into months, confidence grew. I started finding my rhythm not just in the workout itself, but in the way I connected with participants.
There have been plenty of memorable moments from teaching three classes in a single day to meeting participants who tell me how much Combat helps them switch off from stress. And yes, my trusty pair of red trainers has been with me every step of the way.
What I Have Learned
Teaching Body Combat is not just about fitness. It is about resilience, consistency, and community. I have learned to adapt, to bring my best even when I am tired, and to make sure every class feels like an experience, not just a workout. The support from other instructors and the enthusiasm of participants has kept me motivated throughout the year. No matter how I feel, I alway try to take the class up a level. I remember covering a class with other 3 participants, and a wise instructor told me, it’s not about who’s not here, it’s about the people that showed up, make it memorable for them!
Looking Ahead
This first year has been about learning, growing, and laying the foundations. Year 2 is about building on that, becoming an even stronger coach, pushing my limits further, and continuing to share the energy of Combat with everyone who comes to class. Les Mills Advanced Training is my to-do list in 2026! I am always grateful for every single jab, cross and side kick. If this year is anything to go by, the journey ahead is going to be just as fast, just as challenging, and even more rewarding.
