The Reality Check
Recently I had surgery. Nothing major, but serious enough that after a consultation it became clear it couldn’t wait. I’d been dealing with pain on and off for about 6 months, thinking it was just a strain. I kept training, teaching and pushing through, but when it started affecting sleep and daily movement I knew I had to act. The consultation confirmed what I was feeling, urgent surgery.
Pressing Pause
Hearing that I needed to stop completely was tough. No gym for 2 weeks and no Body Combat for at least 4 weeks and I’ve had to hand over or cancel 18 combat classes and that’s not easy when teaching is such a big part of my week (not just for me but for my combat crew). The first few days were strange, no gym clothes needed, no planning playlists, I didn’t realise how much routine shapes my mindset until it disappeared but it’s important to remember this rest is part of training but it’s harder than it sounds when you’re used to constant movement.
Week 1 was about doing nothing, properly resting, eating well and letting my body heal. By week 2 the gel stitches started coming off naturally and I felt real progress. I’m still restless but I’m learning patience (or trying to)
Looking Ahead
What’s surprised me most is how some people I expected to hear from haven’t checked in. You see them viewing Instagram stories or liking posts but not asking how you are – strange. It’s not a complaint, more a reminder that online connection isn’t the same as genuine care.
The plan now is simple, recover properly and build back gradually, no rushing or shortcuts. My fitness isn’t just about pushing forward, it’s knowing when to pause and reset. I’m looking forward to getting back to normality, returning to my classes and finishing the year stronger, mentally and physically. Bring it on!
